Adderbury Team WI were at Adderbury Lakes yesterday Thursday, 24th August, removing unwanted plant material from our main site, around our ox-eye daisies, plus hoeing our extn. bed where we have a bright array of wild flowers in bloom. There’s no sign of any growth from new sowings made on our recent wild flower walk. We will keep this extn. bed clear of weeds to assist our plants for next year.

We were also at KHH working on our WI Grow Wild areas where new sowings in May are now growing very well with Corncockle, Corn Chamomile and others hopefully will soon bloom.

We have one poppy already in bloom but it is a cultivated poppy from plant material deposited before we began growing our site. A wild poppy plant may yet appear.

The Viper’s Bugloss is in flower again and we will endeavour to collect seeds in time. Our Corn Chamomile plants are maturing and we will gather dried seed heads shortly, perhaps next week.

Adderbury Team WI were out again on Thursday, 10th August, at KHH where Grow Wild seeds sown during our wild flower walk at the end of July, are already making their appearance. Seeds sown in June at the front edge of our main border are doing really well too and we’re hoping for a late flowering to look forward to.

We were also at Adderbury Lakes, clearing back dead plant material in the main bed. Our extension bed is still fairly clear from our last visit but we’ll need to keep a close eye on the weeds here as they will rapidly overtake any new seedlings which happen to appear.

Here’s a photo or two of both wild flower areas xxx

Adderbury Team WI were hard at work at Adderbury Lakes weeding our main area and the extension bed of weeds last Thursday morning in the rain. Our new seedlings are doing very well but we must tell you that the new plant – the Dark Mullein (Verbascum nigrum) found two weeks ago on our main area, has disappeared and whether by nature or intervention, I cannot say. There is another single/double siting further along, on the left hand side, whose existence we will check on tomorrow.

At KHH, more clearance of faded Campion plants was carried out and here also our new seedlings are doing well. We even have a Corncockle plant in flower in the 2nd bed which is very heartening.

Here are some photos of both sites xxx

Dear Members,

Our Wild Flower Walk lead by Team WI – and the weather was perfect. Everyone had the opportunity of seed sowing at KHH – with a unique blend of home-collected and dried seeds from our KHH garden – Corn Chamomile from 2015, Campion from 2016 and wild poppy also from 2015 – which were scattered over both beds, with some delicate use of the stepping stones at the rear half of our main bed. These have been in place since 2015 and very useful they are too for all sorts of reasons.

Dinner at The Pickled Ploughman, after our walk, was a truly smashing occasion and a great opportunity for becoming better acquainted.

We then walked along East End Lane to Adderbury Lakes, with 3 packets of seeds and flower-named canes for id.purposes. And the first thing Team WI was able to show our walkers, was the Dark Mullein plant (although at first even I couldn’t locate it) and after we had oohed and aahed over our new Verbascum and our poppies, ox-eye daisies, campion and white bladder campion and self-seal plant, we proceeded to sow our seeds in the main bed extension area, which Bernice and her Sister very kindly cleared completely last October. We created 7 sowings, which may or may not survive against competing weeds and the vagaries of our weather, but Team WI will be on hand to clear away those pesky weeds and water our new sowings, in the hope and anticipation of new flower blooms for 2018.

Here’s a few photos including our new Dark Mullein and our other new seedling blooms, from seeds sown in May, which managed to survive against the odds and flower prettily for us this summer …

Adderbury Team WI were hard at work on Thursday morning, at Adderbury Lakes and at KHH, making sure our wild flower sites were pruned, cleared of dead plant material and newly seeded areas weeded of grass and unwanted green items, as we do every week. But this week, we had a wild flower walk to look forward to, this very evening at 6.30pm so needing our areas to look their very best.

It was very helpful to have Carrol join Team WI for work at Adderbury Lakes – thank you Carrol.

And we have a surprise for our walkers and all members, in that Team WI discovered a “new plant” on our site at Adderbury Lakes. The plant – Dark Mullein – Verbascum nigrum – has dark green basal leaves and a short stem which supports very pretty pale yellow flowers with dark centres, the colour of which comes from the violet coloured hairs on the 5 stamens. The flowers cluster very thickly right to the very tip of the stem, a point I slightly missed when first researching the plant, making me think it was a Moth Mullein. It was Andrew Barnes, with his larger Flora resource book, who id. the correct plant. We have been in close touch since Monday, making this week very exciting as this plant was new to me….and frankly one does not come across Verbascums very often. The last such plant seen was along the Oxford Canal at Lower Heyford last summer

And then, on Tuesday, when I was away from Adderbury, I suddenly chanced on the same Dark Mullein plant in deep countryside at Pusey, Nr. Faringdon. So its been an exciting week of discovery.

Here’s a photo or two … xxx

Dear Members,

Adderbury Team WI were also at KHH last Thursday at our Grow Wild Seed site where our new Grow Wild seedlings, sown in June, are doing really well. A little weeding of stray grass shoots just to give our seedlings the best chance for survival was all that was needed and then we firmly embedded the stepping stones at the rear of the main bed to allow for ease of planting saved seeds from last autumn’s seed harvest, next Thursday evening on our Wild Flower Walk We have a great many campion seeds available for sowing.

Our Viper’s Bugloss is doing well in our 2nd bed at the back of which, a Day Lily has sprung up from the plants very kindly donated by a Village plant sale at The Manor last summer. It sits very well amongst the primrose plants and hollyhock .which we hope blooms soon. Here’s a photo or two ,,,, xxx

Adderbury Team WI were out at Adderbury Lakes last Thursday checking on our 4 small clumps of new flowering wild seeds sown in May. Thankfully, despite the weeds and dry conditions, these survived against the strongly competing weeds, a dock-like plant with large leaves which are surprisingly easy to pull out, all being generally shallow-bedded. Some necessary digging and careful handling about the new seedlings, one of which is already in flower. Here’s a pic or two of this extension bed and our main bed which is full of poppies, campion and ox-eye daisies…xxx

Dear Members,

Team WI were once again at KHH with Grow Wild Seeds on, Thursday, 13th July for ground raking, new seedling check – they are really doing well and coming along nicely, followed by a good chat to two KHH visitors who, viewing KHH’s gardens, came upon our wild flower area and were most interested to hear all about our site, our link with Grow Wild of Kew Royal Botanic Gardens and our growing flowers. And then, thanks to Brian, head Volunteer Team leader, I was able to put down more stepping stones at the rear edge of our main bed, to enable seed sowing during our Wild Flower Walk on Thursday, 27th July.

Team WI also carried out a quick weeding session at Adderbury Lakes, on the main bed extension, which has been cleared of many thistles and re-seeded with wild flower seeds which, despite the thistles and other weeds, have still struggled to grow and survive. They should be looking really good for our Wild Flower Walk on Thursday, 27th July, Here’s pics of both sites – KHH and then Adderbury Lakes xxx

A quick weed at Adderbury Lakes by Team WI yesterday pm, in the hot sun, but oh my the benefit from just a short weed. That awful sticky plant line had wound its way around, over and through our wild flower collection – ox-eye daisies, Campion, and white Campion and poppies – and just by a little pruning out of this rampant weed, our plants were able to lift their heads and move more freely.

Of course, what all our plants want is a good rainfall very soon. A nice, steady light downpour would be excellent xxx

Adderbury Team WI were at KHH yesterday weeding round our new Grow Wild seedlings, which are just beginning to appear, having been sown at the beginning of June. With the ground becoming so dry, I was rather anxious about their progress and very relieved to find them doing so well. Both beds were watered. Dear Members,

Adderbury Team WI were hard at work last Thursday, 15th June, clearing away twigs, branches and background material to bring more daylight to our Grow Wild wild flower area at KHH.

Our Campion have sadly withered and fallen due to awful lack of rain recently. Luckily they were on show for the Open Garden Day at KHH on Sunday 4th June.

As soon as the ground nearest the hedge is cleared, we shall be re-sowing and watering, to bring further colour to our area.

Dear Members,

Team WI wild flower gardening at Adderbury Lakes where are areas are doing rather well. We had a newly cleared area from late last year, next to our main bed, which we have now cleared of a whole bagful of very healthy thistles – Eeyore would have been delighted with our haul – which have gone on to the compost heap.

The plot has now been seeded with kindly given wild flower seeds and own poppy seeds to hand, which should brighten our area considerably, even if only a few seedlings manage to struggle up through competing weeds and busy thistles.

Hopefully, passing bees will linger over our wild flowers and carry back lovely pollen for honey making duties.

Team WI Wild flower gardening at KHH last Thursday, 25th May. Fading Campion blooms were pruned out and the path in our second bed was cleared by hoe to remove unwanted greenery. Over-hanging branches and plant material were cut-back and everything tidied-up. Our Campions continue to bloom well and we also have strong growth of our Corn chamomile plants which hopefully will bloom shortly. The KHH Open Garden day is Sunday, 4th June – 2 – 5pm when we hope to have a good show of wild flower blooms.

Dear Members,

Adderbury WI GWS gardening at KHH last Thursday, our area a sea of pink Campion plants, already standing to attention and looking very good. Add a few allowable buttercups amongst the campions and that’s our springtime site. Luckily, there are a few presently bare patches for new seedings which can be done very soon, when the ground will be raked both before and after seeding, very lightly just to cover the new seeds, hopefully giving us a fresh input of last year’s summer annuals. Maybe even a poppy or two.

Our second bed spring plants continue to bloom well and look gorgeous. Here are a few photo views of our wildflower area xxx

theWI Adderbury & District WI – WI Wildflower Gardening with Adderbury Lakes Working Party – Saturday, 8th April 2017 http://www.adderburywi.co.uk/2017/04/thewi-adderbury-district-wi-wi-wildflower-gardening-adderbury-lakes-working-party-saturday-8th-april-2017/ Mon, 10 Apr 2017 07:39:42 +0000 http://www.adderburywi.co.uk/?p=3599

Dear Members,

Adderbury WI Wildflower gardening on Saturday 8th April with Adderbury Lakes Working Party, dividing four of our ox-eye daisy plants. They have grown so well since bedding in last spring 2016 it was thought a good idea to divide and plant out in adjacent beds to increase the wildflower stock and bring more wild blooms to Adderbury Lakes.

The plants were in very shallow beds making it quite easy to dig up and lift out, then water well and find new planting sites, which other members did for me. There are other clumps which could be divided up in the autumn, making for a wider spread of wild flowers, which will further add to the Lakes stock of natural flowers.

Our plants will need regular watering to help them become established and prosper in this present dry spell along with plug plants, also to be cared for.

here are two photos from Saturday and one flowering plant from 2016 …..

theWI Adderbury & District WI – WI GWS Wildflowers with KHH – Thursday, 30th March 2017 – – Springtime wild flowers are growing well http://www.adderburywi.co.uk/2017/04/thewi-adderbury-district-wi-wi-gws-wildflowers-khh-thursday-30th-march-2017-springtime-wild-flowers-growing-well/ Mon, 03 Apr 2017 15:28:04 +0000 http://www.adderburywi.co.uk/?p=3597

Dear Members,

Adderbury & District WI GWS wildflower gardening at KHH last Thursday where, after the last few weeks of regular work on our areas within the main KHH beautiful gardens, our perennial plants now into their third year’s presence, are looking really good. This week the rake and hoe were applied enthusiastically, a few wild plants removed to the lower bed with its summer-shade canopy of greenery – so only weeds and thistles – knapweed – and others manage to survive, and edging work, which made our main bed look really good. The border of kindly given KHH plants – primroses etc, and plants from friends, are all at their Spring-Best performance and our second bed, still requiring a little attention, is doing its best to keep up with its neighbour. Hopefully, we shall be able to re-sow soon and already I’m looking forward to a bright summer of fresh and perennial wild flower blooms.

And, news update for their annual Open Day at KHH – first weekend of June – on Sunday, 4th June and hopefully our WI wildflower area will be looking its best for this very special event and occasion.

here’s how our area is looking good – now xxx
