Posted by on Jul 5, 2014 in Reflections

Alice Foster presented a fascinating introduction to the collection of  wonderful treasures to be found in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, urging members to allow a twenty-minute time-slot during their next visit to Oxford, to view one or two of these treasures which we in Oxfordshire, so fortunately, have on our doorstep.

WI members also enjoyed a fragrant evening visit to Fiona Taylor’s Medicinal Herbal Garden –

 Competition – Adderbury & District WI Calendar – 2016

Posted by on Oct 9, 2014 in Reflections

The Adderbury & District WI are putting together a Charity Calendar for local deserving causes.

Unlike the infamous “WI Calendar” we thought we would showcase our fabulous village, with its history, beautiful gardens and chocolate box cottages.  There will be a different photograph for every month  passing through the year with seasonal pictures.  With this in mind, we will have the Calendar ready for sale in September 2015.

Thursday, 6th November 2014 – Sulgrave Manor by Cymon Snow

Posted by on Nov 27, 2014 in Reflections

My report comes from  the recorded notes of the draft Minutes of the WI meeting on Thursday, 6th November 2014.

“Following refreshments our speaker Cymon Snow gave a very interesting talk on Sulgrave Manor.  He introduced us to significant members of the Washington family from the 12th to the 17th centuries and explained how riches and land were often acquired by marriage to wealthy widows.  The family connection with George Washington, so important to the preservation and continuing support of the manor, became clear.

Thursday, 8th January 2015 – Alan Brewer with his Humorous talk on working for BOAC (the posh bit)

Posted by on Jan 11, 2015 in Reflections

For our first WI Meeting of 2015 our Guest Speaker, Alan Brewer, gave his terribly amusing and fascinating Humorous talk on Working for BOAC (the posh bit). Alan told of early home baking fun with his mother, of his four-year apprenticeship with a Master Baker and becoming a master baker himself, working with TV celebrity chefs Fanny and Johnnie  Craddock all of which was followed by a wonderful opportunity to interview for BOAC.  His acceptance by BOAC, the following eight-week training course and subsequent safety-first and health training were all undertaken very seriously indeed.
