Minutes of the meeting held at The Institute, Adderbury, 4 June 2015 7.30 pm
- In the absence of Diane at the NFWI meeting in the Albert Hall, Margaret, our vice-president, welcomed 30 members and 4 guests.
- The minutes of the meeting held on 7 May 2015 were approved and signed.
- Matters arising:
WI calendar: The initial choice of photos is almost complete. Copies will be ready in time for Party in the Park for the first chance for the public to vote for their favourites. The next meeting of the Calendar committee is on 10 June.
Wild flowers at Katherine House: Margaret reported that the seeds were up and the ones in the greenhouse particularly well advanced. They should flower in August. She has made a poster and a slate sign and will have these, a folder of photos and various props ready for the KHH Open Garden on 7 June. She has sent an article to the Banbury Guardian and The Cake, and hopes a piece will be included in News and Views and perhaps WI Life. There is also information on the website and Facebook page and it has been sent to the Grow Wild organisation. Margaret thanked Gill and Diane for all their help.
Christopher Rawlins School and St Mary’s church fete Saturday 13 June: Margaret thanked everyone who had already given filled and wrapped jars for the stall and appealed for more and for help on the day. Jars can be taken to Caroline or Bernice or brought directly to the playing field.
Party in the Park Saturday 20 June: Several members have already volunteered to make cakes and/or to help on our refreshment stall, but more would be much appreciated. A sign-up list was on the table. - Committee report:
Parish Council Grant: As there is a very positive balance in the WI account and more funds should be raised through calendar sales, no application has been made this year, but one will be considered again next year.
Proposed social evening for the WI Centenary: Members responded enthusiastically to the suggestion of a Fish and Chip supper in September to celebrate the WI centenary. There could be quizzes relating to 1915 and wearing hats of the period was also suggested.
Christmas tree decorations: Caroline asked members to contact her if they had suggestions for decorations that would represent the WI’s different activities, and to consider organising a group to make them.
The next committee meeting is at 7.30 on Wednesday 17 June.
- Correspondence/communications:
OFWI have sent information about a vacancy for Federation Secretary. The post is for 30 hours a week with some additional days for special events. Contact OFWI at 5 Court Barn Farms Tackley OX53AL for application forms which need to be returned by 24 July.
News and Views copies should be available for all members at the July meeting. Details of various outings and events organised by OFWI were on the table and on the web site.
- Programme and activities: Walks: On 12 May members enjoyed a beautiful walk in the bluebell woods at Ditchley Park, kindly led by Carrol and Chris Eaton. On Monday 6 July Maureen Banks and her friend Hazel are leading a Lark Rise walk from Hethe to Fringford with the option of a pub meal afterwards. Meet at the Institute at 6 o’clock for car-sharing. Members were asked to sign up for this and indicate whether they wanted a meal.
The book group met on 20 May and discussed Some Luck by Jane Smiley. The next meeting is to talk about The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton (7.30 on Wednesday 10 June at 2 Long Wall Close). Bernice stressed that new members are always welcome to join the group.
The needlecraft group met on 13 May and will meet again on 17 June at Janet Morgan’s house.
Thirteen members enjoyed a very interesting evening visit to Sulgrave Manor on 28 May when we learned a lot about the history of the house, its owners and the objects in it, as well as having a chance to admire the beautifully kept gardens in the late evening sun.
Members who wanted to come to the farm walk (optional) and supper at June Stilgoe’s on 25 June and hadn’t yet signed the sheet were asked to do so. There is no cost but donations in aid of Frank Wise school can be made on the night. Partners are welcome.
Members were reminded of the Mikron theatre performance at the Pig Place on 13 August. The play is inspired by the WI centenary.
- Any other business: Centenary raffle: The first prize is £10,000 and tickets are still available from Caroline at £1 a ticket.
- Community items: A request for cakes for a fund-raising event for Katherine House at Broughton Grange on 13 June has been received. Any member who would like to donate a cake should let Margaret know. This would be in a private capacity rather than as a WI member.
Katherine House Hospice gardens will be open on Sunday 7 June from
2 to 6 pm. Art work by day patients at the hospice will be exhibited on Saturday and Sunday.
FOSMA’s annual Jazz in the Garden will be on Sunday 5 July. Tickets cost £10 and are available from Trish Fennell.
Adderbury Community market will be on Thursday 11 June at the Institute.
After a break for refreshments Claire Jarvis from Fibreworks in Chipping Norton told us a little about the history of rag rug making. She explained how rugs were made from worn out clothes or scraps from the mills. A new rug would be placed in the parlour on Christmas day and the old one moved to the kitchen range. The old kitchen one would then go by the back door and the oldest of all went to the compost bin. Claire then provided the materials and taught us the technique so that we could all try this old form of recycling.
Caroline thanked Claire for an unusual and interesting evening which was an opportunity for members to socialise as well as try a new craft.
Our next meeting will be in the Institute at 7.30 on Thursday 2 July when our speaker will be Brian Little. His talk is called ‘From Carriers to Commuters’
