Dear Ladies,
I attended this “ShoWIng Off” workshop event in Didcot thinking it could be both interesting and useful, which really wasn’t quite right because it was, in fact, an absolutely brilliant demonstration of what not to do when staging a competition, doing collaborative work for an event or even just knowing how to make an excellent display for a meeting’s table. Our tutor has a long history of working for Selfridges in their display department and also for others businesses, run his own display entity and taught students the art of display and interpretation. His wealth of knowledge was evident from the very start of his presentation.
The agenda included –
Introduction and discussion based around presentation of examples from shows
layout, focal point and lines of sight
Interpretation of ideas and themes
Basic colour schemes
Equipment, materials and suppliers
Props on a budget and thinking sustainably
Summing up and questions
Handouts were provided and these now form the basis for my own studies so that I may produce more relevant displays for Adderbury WI like my interpretation for the “Share the Love…….make and wear a green heart” campaign for the Valentine’s Day for climate change…

My presentation for NFWI & initiatives Campaign “Share the Love” for Climate Control
We heard about the balance and layout for our presentation, the focal point to catch the beholder’s notice; the starting point and height of your display , the creation of lines of sight constructed by chosen display objects and the provision of sight breaks within your display. We learnt the names of layout types – repetition, alternation, radiation and grouping and of the need for careful planning, organisation and control of items for a display; what added or detracted from a presentation for competition entries and pleasing displays.
And we were given a colour wheel to fill in to aid our displays. The day whizzed by and there was almost too much information to take in on this first introduction to a most fascinating study subject. There was some talk of further demonstration workshop on this topic which I would hope to attend.
