theWI Adderbury & District WI – New Events Posting – Monday, 27th April 2015
Dear Ladies, “Home Fires” ITV 6-part series based on “Jambusters” by Julie Summers and Grow Wild Seed Planting at Katharine House Hospice Diane thought you might all like to hear, if you’ve not done so already, about the new 6-part ITV series – “Home Fires” which begins next Sunday, 3rd May, at 9pm – on ITV television – the Bank Holiday weekend – which I for one am looking forward to very much indeed. About “Jambusters” …. Julie Summers book “Jambusters” – a history of the Women’s Institute in wartime as an historical overview of village institutes and tales about jam making, vegetable growing, and other activities associated with WW2.. In MailOnline posted on 24th April 2015 on FaceBook – the opening line reported – “The Jambusters! The WI were the backbone of the Home Front in WW2, now a powerful new drama follows the war’s impact on the women of one village circle. By JULIE SUMMERS FOR THE DAILY MAIL PUBLISHED: 23:31, 24th April 2015 | UPDATED: 23:31, 24th April 2015″ A copy of this article is in my FaceBook WI Publications File which will be at our meeting on 7th May at Church House for members to read. FaceBook comments on “Jambusters” “Superb…this book tells a wonderful story….highly recommended.” from Who Do You Think You Are Magazine” – from Mail on Sunday – “Julie Summers recounts how thousands of women rallied round during the dark days of Hitler, baking cakes and knitting jumpers as if their lives depended on it.” This piece also appears on the front page of her book as does this comment from the Economist – “That image of defiant jam making sums up the way many see the wartime contribution of the Woman’s Institute. But Julie Summers….shows its much wider contribution.” Ref: FaceBook comments on “Jambusters” and comments shown on the front page of “Jambusters” And now the ITV “Home Fires” series….I should think we’re all in for a great viewing season for the next six weeks!!! GROW WILD SEEDS at KATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE – Katharine House Hospice have very generously offered us the use of a patch of ground within their lovely gardens on which to plant the Grow Wild Seeds given to us by Kew Royal Botanic Gardens and supported by The Big Lottery. I’ve just opened one seed kit box to find it contains – 6 packets of seeds, 5 plastic markers, a getting started guide and a DIY bee house !!! Diane, Gill and Margaret will be at the gardens on Thursday, 30th April from 9.30pm to midday, to start prepping the ground for planting. We should be delighted to welcome other members to join us, if they are free and happy to do so, to help with our patch of ground at KHH for our Adderbury & District WI wild flower garden. There is a little clearance and digging to be attempted but we have been offered some help by Mr. Colin Sykes, who is one of the gardens volunteers’ Team Leaders, the use of their tools, a nearby water supply and quite possibly, mid-Morning Coffee with buns – so a great fun morning to look forward to! A telephone call or email to Diane, Gill or Margaret would be much appreciated so that I can tell KHH how many will be there on Thursday morning. We are all terribly excited to be involved with this project of Kew Botanic Royal Gardens and looking forward to the planting, sowing and nurturing our new wild flower garden for...

Diane and I were at Katharine House Hospice this morning to view a patch of ground which their team leader, Colin Sykes, thought might suit our purposes, and indeed we were delighted with the area Colin took us too. It’s a longish patch just down from the compost bins and the bonfire area, rather neglected, stony and fairly full of stinging nettles which, you will be pleased to hear, we will be able to get rid of more or less easily for Colin has promised to put down some quick acting chemical to deal with the offending greenery. We shall leave a few plants at the back of the bed to encourage butterflies. We have also been given permission to trim away some of the over-hanging branches of the trees at either end of the patch and offered the use of any of their equipment, as required. There’s a water supply and hose pipe fairly close-by and a new connecting attachment and sprinkler will be made ready for our next visit. We have also been promised the help of two of their volunteer gardeners if we need their assistance to get things moving. We were invited to stay for elevenses and to meet their team of helpers who were also most interested to meet us and altogether, the morning was a great success. One of their lady helpers was a WI member from Middleton Cheney and our meeting prompted an interesting chatter over coffee. The gardens are absolutely brimming over with springtime colour and exuberance while the viburnum plant was positively overpoweringly sweet-smelling and gorgeous. We viewed their bog garden, the greenhouse full of Scottish rockery seedlings, veggie seedlings and one yacon seedling – “from northern and central Andes, it has a crisp, sweet tasting tuberous root; another name is the Peruvian ground apple.” Ref: Google Page information, from my iphone”. Apparently, once in the ground, it just grows and grows! We liked their animal statuary and delighted to see a visiting heron in the field beyond the garden fence. So Diane and I will be at Katharine House Hospice next Thursday morning, 30th April from 9.30-ish to midday and if any other members are willing and able to join us, we should be very pleased to see them!!! Adderbury & District WI was well represented at Barford St. Michael’s Coffee Morning for the Centenary Baton handover by Banbury WI to Barford St. Michael at Barford Village hall whose members put on a very welcoming event, well supplied with delicious cakes and shortbread. Stella Oaks, our new WI Adviser was there and so too members from other nearby WI and those who could not attend other Baton Events. I spoke to Margaret Woodgrove, founding President of 1949, who instituted the making of a special tablecloth for use at meetings and social events; how the transfer for the WI motif came through a close family relative and of the Founding Members’ names being embroidered in the centre with members adding their names around the borders. Margaret’s daughter Helen, has also served as President of Barford WI. Margaret Woodgrove is the last remaining Founding member and it was a great pleasure to talk with her. We were a very lively party waiting for the handover to take place, with many photos being taken of the Baton, the membership and visitors. Finally, we all gathered around the baton for group photos, then processed outside to witness the handover and its farewell send-off, for the forward journey to Bicester. The Baton will visit five other WI groups, picking up delicious homemade WI cakes for delivery to Bicester, being driven in a vintage 1934 Morris van by Mr. Needle of Steeple Aston, with Mrs. Needle charmingly dressed in period dress of the day.
