theWI Adderbury & District WI – WI Cake stall at PIP on Saturday, 20th June 2015

Posted by on Jun 25, 2015 in Reflections

Party in the Park Festival day dawned bright with rain clouds appearing later as rain was forecast, pattering, falling throughout the day and keeping crowds down a little.  By the time our WI stall closed for the day at 6 o’clock, the sun was hot and shining brightly in a clear blue sky. Our homemade cake stall looked very good with a great choice of Victoria sandwich cakes and sponges, chocolate Victoria sponges, flapjack, lemon drizzle squares, almond biscuits, Tiffin, a pineapple fruit cake, another lemon drizzle loaf cake,  gingerbread and delicious looking  lemon squares. Flowers for the table were decorated by Diane and everything was set up and organised smoothly and we were very delighted with all the scrumptious cakes made by fellow members of Adderbury WI. Unfortunately, the generator failed to work to begin with, making it impossible for us to serve our first guests hot refreshment with their cakes, but they were very patient and kind and came back when we were ready with boiling water from our urn. So thanks to everyone and here are a few photos of our lovely day…                   Margaret Halstead                      ...

theWI Adderbury & District Jam Jar Tombola Stall at School Fete – Saturday 13th June 2015

Posted by on Jun 16, 2015 in Reflections

Christopher Rawlins Primary School and St. Mary’s Church Fete morning opened to a rain-soaked and rather cold day and so it continued  albeit that it became warmer later on midday.   In spite of this cold dismal weather, school children with siblings, their parents, families and villagers and guests poured into the school premises determined to enjoy all the facilities laid on by the School. We were there with our filled and wrapped jam jars where we were able to put on a stunning display of brightly coloured and beribboned jars, chock-a-block full of all manner of delightful items, with our audience coming back and then again, determined to win one of the lucky tombola jars.  Some were lucky enough to win two or three jars, some none despite their best efforts, yet all were kindly disposed to try their luck at our stall. A lucky player won the  last two jars at 2.30 when we were able to close down the stall and  hand over our takings to the School, which all of us were delighted to do.  We had enjoyed a good day at Christopher Rawlins School who very kindly organised our table and signage and all their kind help was very much welcomed by Diane, Gill and Margaret.         Margaret Halstead  ...

theWI Adderbury & District WI – Evening Tour of Sulgrave Manor – 28 May 2015

Posted by on Jun 16, 2015 in Reflections

Members enjoyed a fascinating Evening tour of Sulgrave Manor guided by a most knowledgeable tour leader who told us a great deal about its owners, the history of the Manor and the furniture within its walls.  The kitchen was particularly interesting with its horrendous mouse trap, its indoor working water pump and amazing array of tools and copper pans.  The master bedroom with its vaulted ceiling, the hangings and bed coverings were also  very well-worth viewing.  The bundles of large teasels about the main reception rooms, the dole cupboard, the tea dishes and chocolate cups and saucers  were all-compelling and delightful to view. Our visit ended with a walk through their wonderful herb garden containing both our regular assortment of well-known herbs and American herbs and the National Garden of the Herb Society is situate within Sulgrave Manor’s garden walls.   The Garden was bathed in the golden light of a beautiful early summer’s evening.  Here are a few photos  of  our visit…                         Sulgrave Manor is an entirely fascinating, beautiful and wonderful venue for a visit and repeat visits whenever possible.       Margaret Halstead PS  I’m so sorry this posting has been delayed by computer problems which are being sorted out now. ,        ...

theWI Adderbury & District WI – Minutes of WI Meeting on 4th June 2015 at The Institute

Posted by on Jun 9, 2015 in Reflections

Minutes of the meeting held at The Institute, Adderbury, 4 June 2015 7.30 pm   In the absence of Diane at the NFWI meeting in the Albert Hall, Margaret, our vice-president, welcomed 30 members and 4 guests. The minutes of the meeting held on 7 May 2015 were approved and signed. Matters arising: WI calendar: The initial choice of photos is almost complete. Copies will be ready in time for Party in the Park for the first chance for the public to vote for their favourites. The next meeting of the Calendar committee is on 10 June. Wild flowers at Katherine House: Margaret reported that the seeds were up and the ones in the greenhouse particularly well advanced. They should flower in August. She has made a poster and a slate sign and will have these, a folder of photos and various props ready for the KHH Open Garden on 7 June. She has sent an article to the Banbury Guardian and The Cake, and hopes a piece will be included in News and Views and perhaps WI Life. There is also information on the website and Facebook page and it has been sent to the Grow Wild organisation. Margaret thanked Gill and Diane for all their help. Christopher Rawlins School and St Mary’s church fete Saturday 13 June: Margaret thanked everyone who had already given filled and wrapped jars for the stall and appealed for more and for help on the day. Jars can be taken to Caroline or Bernice or brought directly to the playing field. Party in the Park Saturday 20 June: Several members have already volunteered to make cakes and/or to help on our refreshment stall, but more would be much appreciated. A sign-up list was on the table. Committee report: Parish Council Grant: As there is a very positive balance in the WI account and more funds should be raised through calendar sales, no application has been made this year, but one will be considered again next year. Proposed social evening for the WI Centenary: Members responded enthusiastically to the suggestion of a Fish and Chip supper in September to celebrate the WI centenary. There could be quizzes relating to 1915 and wearing hats of the period was also suggested. Christmas tree decorations: Caroline asked members to contact her if they had suggestions for decorations that would represent the WI’s different activities, and to consider organising a group to make them. The next committee meeting is at 7.30 on Wednesday 17 June. Correspondence/communications: OFWI have sent information about a vacancy for Federation Secretary. The post is for 30 hours a week with some additional days for special events. Contact OFWI at 5 Court Barn Farms Tackley OX53AL for application forms which need to be returned by 24 July. News and Views copies should be available for all members at the July meeting. Details of various outings and events organised by OFWI were on the table and on the web site.   Programme and activities: Walks: On 12 May members enjoyed a beautiful walk in the bluebell woods at Ditchley Park, kindly led by Carrol and Chris Eaton. On Monday 6 July Maureen Banks and her friend Hazel are leading a Lark Rise walk from Hethe to Fringford with the option of a pub meal afterwards. Meet at the Institute at 6 o’clock for car-sharing. Members were asked to sign up for this and indicate whether they wanted a meal. The book group met on 20 May and discussed Some Luck by Jane Smiley. The next meeting is to talk about The Miniaturist by Jessie...
