Denman College

Posted by on Nov 22, 2011 in Reflections

On Monday 24th October five members from Adderbury WI attended a day at Denman College. There were around 70 WI members attending on that day, some were also from Oxfordshire, but the majority had travelled from Wales by coach the day before. The gardens and grounds were very impressive and we were very fortunate with the weather. We were able to enjoy the gardens in full sunshine; the trees in particular were stunning, showing all their lovely autumn colours. We were given a cookery demonstration given by Peter Lien (resident chef at Denman). He demonstrated several ways with Pea Soup, Pot Roast Pheasant, Sweet Potato and Sage Gratin and a Pink Pannacotta with Bramble Syrup. He made it all look so easy! Afterwards we had a look around the Kitchens in the Cookery School. These which were very impressive with all the latest equipment. Lunch followed, after which we were split into four parties for a tour of the college. The rooms were all very impressive and the whole place had an air of calm and relaxation; in fact one of our members commented that she felt she had had a break away rather than just a day out! We were treated to a cream tea, after which we made our way home. All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing day...

The Real Larkrise To Candleford

Posted by on Nov 22, 2011 in Reflections

For an additional walk in May we joined Aynho WI and spent a very enjoyable morning tracing the real Larkrise to Candleford. This delightful walk included a stop to read the Memorial stone to Flora Thompson. There was lots of chat and exchanging of ideas between the WI’s. We had hoped to stop at a local pub for lunch BUT being such fast walkers we were too early for lunch…..perhaps we should make a return visit, timing it to coincide with lunch!….Can anyone remember the way?

Farm Walk and Barn Supper by kind invitation of Robert and June Stilgoe

A group of WI members, partners and children met on a fine June evening. We had a lovely ramble around the farm and surrounding fields with Robert as our guide giving us lots of interesting local information about his crops, the countryside and local folklore. Our tour ended up at the barn where June had prepared a most delicious supper. Our hosts were most generous in their hospitality and all agreed the evening was first class.
