Thursday, 6th November 2014 – Sulgrave Manor by Cymon Snow
My report comes from the recorded notes of the draft Minutes of the WI meeting on Thursday, 6th November 2014. “Following refreshments our speaker Cymon Snow gave a very interesting talk on Sulgrave Manor. He introduced us to significant members of the Washington family from the 12th to the 17th centuries and explained how riches and land were often acquired by marriage to wealthy widows. The family connection with George Washington, so important to the preservation and continuing support of the manor, became clear. Cymon outlined the history of the building, much of which is of relatively recent date. He detailed surviving elements of the Tudor house which would indicate status, for instance the use of bricks for chimneys when these were much more expensive than stone and the symbols on the entrance indicating royal connections and involvement in the wool trade. Cymon went on to describe some of the artefacts in the house, many of great historical importance and to tell us about the development of the gardens. He gave us an idea of the many educational and other events organised at Sulgrave and finished by explaining that the manor is held in trust on behalf of the peoples of the United States and Great Britain and is a lasting symbol of peace and friendship between them. Caroline closed the evening with thanks to Cymon for a lively and informative talk. Confessing that she has never visited Sulgrave Manor she was now looking forward to seeing...

The Adderbury & District WI are putting together a Charity Calendar for local deserving causes. Unlike the infamous “WI Calendar” we thought we would showcase our fabulous village, with its history, beautiful gardens and chocolate box cottages. There will be a different photograph for every month passing through the year with seasonal pictures. With this in mind, we will have the Calendar ready for sale in September 2015. The Calendar will not only have photographs but will have the dates of special events through the year, including our Community Market, WI meetings, Party in the Park, the Annual Pantomine, Day of Dance and Christmas Market. We are looking for these special photos and thought it would be fun to have a competition open to young and old throughout the village. The final 48 photographs will be on display so that everyone has a chance to vote for their favourite. The prize will be not only your photograph being on the Calendar but a wonderful WI baked cake. Further details as to where to send your entries will be advised in next month’s Contact – (November). We hope you will not only support the creating of our Calendar but will purchase them for all your friends and family. Adderbury is a wonderful place to live, lets share it. Diane Danton –...

Our Guest Speaker, Ali Templeton, gave a very lively and interesting demonstration of meat and fish-free meals, popular dishes for all the family, all quick and easy to prepare, cook and serve. Ali, her husband and their daughter, were all very relaxed, with a happy-chatty style, for the presentation of her three dishes. A mild-medium vegetable curry with smooth peanut butter to thicken, giving it a smooth silky taste and texture; delicious, very good and so quick to cook. Ali’s second dish of Kedgeree with Quorn, was based more on the original Indian Khichri containing no fish, rather being just a mixture of lentils and rice cooked with spices. Our English Kedgeree of rice with flaked fish, hard-boiled eggs, curry flavouring, butter, parsley and cream evolved from this original recipe. Ali’s recipe took only 20-35 minutes to cook and was another delicious meal to sample. Her third recipe was for an apple pudding of Caramelized Apple with orange butter sauce served with Creme Fraiche and crisp almond biscuits. Decidedly yummy and more-ish, a quick and easy pudding to put together and serve. All recipes came from Ali’s book – “Going Green” – “big flavours without meat” – of which I understand she made good sales to members, when we had all sampled her lovely three offerings! Her are some photo-shots of Ali’s Demonstration – Pauline gave the vote of thanks in which she commented “it’s really nice to see different dishes prepared, cooked amd presented”. Members gathered about Ali as she was packing things away, asking questions and chatting with friends and looking at Ali’s books. We had enjoyed a most successful cookery demonstration for our October WI meeting. ...
