theWI – Adderbury & District WI – Ragbag & Cocktail – Thursday, 5th January 2017 – Julia Miles
Dear Members, As I was on holiday for this meeting at the beginning of January, here are the Minuted comments on our guest speaker’s presentation. “After a break for refreshment, Chris Shafe introduced Julia Miles, an Ambassadors Wife, whom she had met at a potential speakers meeting in Oxford. She gave a very interesting and entertaining talk on her life as the Wife of an Ambassador living abroad. It was entitled, Rag, Bag and Cocktail. She has written a book about her life, which was on sale to members at £10. She was giving £1.00 of each copy sold to our W.I. I think her life with a young family living abroad was often uncertain and dangerous, and not always as glamorous as we might think. Chris gave the vote of thanks.” I was very sorry to miss Julia’s presentation but I did get to hear her speak at the new speakers audition I attended with Chris early in 2016. Margaret Halstead...

Dear members, After my leaf raking at KHH I popped round to inspect our wild flower beds at Adderbury Lakes where all was peacefully tidy with just one ox-eye daisy plant and a few red night shade berries still in view. The extended area dug over by Bernice during the November Lakes work party meet still looked good, ready to be sown up next Spring…..what a delicious thought xxx Adderbury & District WI added 3 new photos. 1 hr · Dear Members, Last Thursday morning at KHH it was still time for leaf raking and gathering-in from our WI GWS bed and I managed to half-fill one of those enormous garden bags which made it impossible for me to take to the leaf-mould store. Luckily two fellow volunteer gardening friends came along in the nick of time, dragging then emptying my leaves into the store. But then, gardening friends are helpfully kind, aren’t they. ! I’m sure more leaves will be down for another gather-in next week and then our beds will have to look after themselves until after my visit to Australia. xxx I’m afraid I missed the Lakes working party meet on Saturday, 3rd December – just too busy with other matters – and I shall also miss Jan’s meet but come Feb. 2017, weather permitting, I shall meet up with my fellow volunteers at Adderbury Lakes for more clearance or clear-up xxx Margaret Halstead...

Karen also spoke of the rare condition Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection – SCAD – which caused a heart attack within weeks of her operation, the scarcity of info and knowledge of the disease and her search for survivors which led eventually to her joint-creation of a charity – Beat SCAD – which Karen now promotes through speaking engagements, a Facebook Page, Twitter and a LinkedIn presence. Karen left leaflets to share with our GPs and other appropriate people whenever possible to help with the spread of awareness and knowledge of this very rare condition. Read MoretheWI Adderbury & District WI – Facebook Post WI GWS at KHH Wild flower gardening – 11th November 2016
Dear Members, Adderbury & District WI GWS gardening at KHH has mostly been a strong argument for leaf clearance from the lush grass around our wild flower beds and from amongst the remaining clumps of corn chamomile. A little seed gathering-in has been carried out and saved in small brown envelopes for 2017 spring sowing. Team WI were not at KHH this week because the computer was proving troublesome but they’re hoping to get back to the leaf clearing and seed collecting tomorrow, unless it rains all day !
