theWI Adderbury & District WI – FB Post for Adderbury Lakes WI Garden Beds Visit – 27th October 2016

Posted by on Oct 29, 2016 in Reflections

Dear Members, Our wild flower garden beds at Adderbury Lakes still have ox-eye daisies in bloom and everybody I come across is very pleased to see them there.  Below is my FB post today about my visit on Thursday of this week, just to see how the garden was looking.  Next Saturday is the November Adderbury Lakes working party meet and I shall be there to take care of our beds, weeding etc. x Adderbury & District WI added 5 new photos. 4 mins · A good visit to our WI wild flower beds at Adderbury Lakes on Tuesday to see how they were doing and all was well. The ox-eye daisies were still blooming excellently and the back-border of the main bed still in good shape after its recent pruning. There are bright red berries still on the deadly night shade plant and the selfheal is also still in bloom, just. Earlier in the summer, I found other selfheal plants in bloom beyond our main bed for a short while, and then they disappeared. A natural thing I imagine but oddly, the selfheal plant in our main wild flower bed at KHH also suddenly disappeared in 2015. Now in 2016, we have another selfheal plant but this time in the smaller, 2nd bed, at KHH, the one which has only dead flowers on its stem. It hides closely behind the corn chamomile and its looking perfectly healthy at the moment but I’m keeping it in my sight, just in case it disappears during the coming months. I do so hope it’s still with us next spring. I will keep you posted xxx The selfheal plant just visible in this first photo. +2 Boost post   Its been fascinating watching the wild flowers develop and grow xxx Margaret Halstead...

theWI Adderbury & District WI – Facebook Post – WI GWS at KHH Gardening – Thursday, 27th October 2017

Dear Members,  Thursday morning was a most perfect autumn day, leaves twirling down from sunbright glowing trees, leaves crunchy underfoot and clumps of leaves in pockets, beneath plants and anywhere the wind blew them all over the lovely gardens at Katharine House Hospice.  The Garden Team were hard at work clearing the ground of leaves as I arrived to collect seeds for next year aft er which, rake in hand, I set to to clear our beds of fallen leaves. Addderbury & District WI added 7 new photos. 1 min · Wonderful morning at KHH for WI GWS gardening on Thursday of this week where at last I was able to collect perfectly ready corn chamomile seed heads for saving for next year. The gardening team were leaf clearing – the lawns were thickly carpeted with masses of red, gold and yellow leaves – which all have to be removed, saved and stored separately for future leaf mold. So I set too with my trusty rake and cleared most of the leaves around and on our WI beds but more were falling as I left, so know other masses will need clearing next week !!! xxx +4 Comments   Adderbury & District WI Gardening is just therapy – pure therapy xxx Margaret Halstead...

Dear Members, Adderbury & District WI added 3 new photos. Just now · Wednesday, 12th October 2016 Last Thursday 6th October wild flower gardening at KHH with our Grow Wild Seeds, with a little help from a friend, I applied hoe and rake to our bed of still-blooming wild flowers, then scattered saved seeds from 2015 with one 2015 seed pack, lightly covering them with a little soil. Thankfully the soil was easy to work as it had been cleared of leaves and edging stones and given a good raking over two weeks earlier. The smaller second bed was left for another week because of more flowering plants but will hopefully re-seed this bed shortly. theWI Adderbury & District WI – Monday, 26th September 2016 – Love wild flower gardening at Adderbury Lakes

Dear Members, Wild flower gardening at Adderbury Lakes on Saturday, 24th September 2016     WI Wild flower gardening at Adderbury Lakes on Saturday 24th September, with members of the Lakes Working Party who were busy pruning and running a bonfire for dead plant material. The aroma of drifting wood smoke was everywhere, the bright sunshine warming everyone, combating that early autumn hint of a cold wind. It was all great fun ! Our two beds were still doing well so I tidied and applied my hoe to the bed beneath the overhanging trees which have developed less wellbecause of tree cover – the ox-eye daisies are doing well. Our main bed was somewhat choked with grass and thistles and twisted stems of ox-eye so a quick tidy-up was all that could be done. I shall return on Tuesday for another session to tidy-up and admire our flowers – the ox-eye daisy, selfheal plants and the red and green berries of deadly nightshade. Our white campion flower has gone but hopefully it will return next year.     Margaret...

Dear Members, Love GWS gardening at KHH today, 22nd September 2016     WI GWS at KHH today, in the rain, clearing leaves, plant material and edging stones and rocks to make the ground ready for autumn seeding. Cleared ground allow seeds to get going and no warm blanket of decaying leaves keeps the earth clean for the next flowering season. And, terribly exciting news to tell you, we have three Corncockle plants just beginning to bloom amongst the corn chamomile and the last remaining pink campions. The plants must have come from this year’s seeds from Kew Royal Botanic Gardens which I grew in my greenhouse into healthy young seedlings and then planted. Just see my pics ….  Margaret...
