theWI Adderbury & District WI -NFWI Craft Committee “ShoWIng Off” Demonstration Workshop – Thursday, 3rd March 2016
Dear Ladies, I attended this “ShoWIng Off” workshop event in Didcot thinking it could be both interesting and useful, which really wasn’t quite right because it was, in fact, an absolutely brilliant demonstration of what not to do when staging a competition, doing collaborative work for an event or even just knowing how to make an excellent display for a meeting’s table. Our tutor has a long history of working for Selfridges in their display department and also for others businesses, run his own display entity and taught students the art of display and interpretation. His wealth of knowledge was evident from the very start of his presentation. The agenda included – Introduction and discussion based around presentation of examples from shows layout, focal point and lines of sight Interpretation of ideas and themes Basic colour schemes Equipment, materials and suppliers Props on a budget and thinking sustainably Summing up and questions Handouts were provided and these now form the basis for my own studies so that I may produce more relevant displays for Adderbury WI like my interpretation for the “Share the Love…….make and wear a green heart” campaign for the Valentine’s Day for climate change… We heard about the balance and layout for our presentation, the focal point to catch the beholder’s notice; the starting point and height of your display , the creation of lines of sight constructed by chosen display objects and the provision of sight breaks within your display. We learnt the names of layout types – repetition, alternation, radiation and grouping and of the need for careful planning, organisation and control of items for a display; what added or detracted from a presentation for competition entries and pleasing displays. And we were given a colour wheel to fill in to aid our displays. The day whizzed by and there was almost too much information to take in on this first introduction to a most fascinating study subject. There was some talk of further demonstration workshop on this topic which I would hope to attend. Margaret Halstead...

Dear Ladies, Here’s a lovely Spring Bunny created by Clare Spender who has said I might download her instructions and details for making pop-pom bunnies for your own Easter festivities. Clare uses a commercial pom-pom maker which is available on the internet and also at the Banbury Sewing Centre, from where I purchased mine. Spring has sprung! So why not create your own Easter Bunny? – See more at: https://www.thewi.org.uk/what-we-do/craft/craft-projects#sthash.cqdUcdwz.dpuf Make your own “Hop Bunny Hop” pom-pom Create your own pom-pom Easter Bunny! Create a family of bunnies! Enjoy Click here for full instructions Have a go at …….. making a pom-pom bunny! (hop bunny hop!) Well Spring has sprung and what better way to celebrate than by making a Spring Bunny! You will need to make 3 pom-poms; I have used a pom-pom maker (which is brilliant! You can make pom poms in half the time and you can get these kits off the internet or good haberdasheries) Create one slightly larger pom-pom than the other and a small white one for your bunny’s tail. Make sure that you use a good length of wool when knotting your pom-pom because you will need it to tie your bunny’s head and body together. Knot your head and body together as tightly as possibly so it doesn’t fall apart! Once you have your body completed you can now create ears! Cut a paper pattern to create the shape of your ears, then choose your fabric and cut 4 ears. Place right sides together and machine stitch around (make sure your reverse stitch both ends so it doesn’t come apart when you are turning your ears the right way) I use a knitting needle to turn the fabric around. Press ears and if you desire run another line of stitching around the edge. Hand stitch your ears together and then place onto the pom-pom and secure with several good stitches though the centre (being quite careful not to pull the wool through as you are stitching!) Now to create eyes and a nose – you can use just beads, which are very effective; however, I have used tiny felt balls cut in half with a small bead on. (you can make these yourself or purchase a small bag of them for a few pounds). I have finished off my Bunny with two wires for whiskers, which I have poked through the front of the pom-pom. Ta da – hop bunny hop! © Clare Spender 2015 Click on the above lin k to see all of Clare’s photos. I’ve bought a pom-pom maker from Banbury and I shall be trying it out at our March Needlecraft group meeting on Wednesday, 16th March at 46 Rochester Way….. Margaret Halstead xxx ...
