theWI Adderbury & District WI – A Clean for Adderbury – Saturday, 5th March 2017

Posted by on Mar 8, 2016 in Reflections

Dear Ladies, I am delighted to tell you that our event, A Clean for Adderbury, managed to secure a total of 15 bags of rubbish and 5 bags of leaf mould and that we also were instrumental in identifying a further 4  items  of dumped rubbish, whose location we have passed on to Cherwell District Council for clearance and disposal. Over coffee and biscuits at the Coach and Horses PH we planned our litter pick-up walks, going off in all directions, filling our Clean for  the Queen purple and black bags, and cleaning grubby road signs wherever possible.   Luckily the sun came out as the morning progressed and the cold wind failed to stop our clean-up endeavours. Gill kindly took all filled bags home with her and these were picked up bright and early by Cherwell DC on Monday morning, plus their loaned hi-viz jackets and pickers. We all enjoyed a splendid morning’s activity, coffee and biscuits and a tasty lunch to round off the event.  Here’s a few photos of mine and Gill’s for all to view….                   Adderbury has been congratulated for taking part by Campaigns Adviser Jane Finnerty and OxClean Team Leader Rosanne Bostock with the hope that “more WI’s will be inspired to join in next year”.   Margaret Halstead...

Posted by on Feb 23, 2016 in Reflections

Dear Ladies,   I thought you might like to see this NFWI Food and Cooking page on this very  interesting topic. The WI is synonymous with good food and its preparation and these traditions of healthy well made food and preserves continue in a wide range of activities with individual members, WIs, Federations and NFWI events. If you have time this spring try to make some of our special recipes for family and friends. Home made Meals, Cake, Puds, Drinks as well as savouries all taste better made with love and care. And you know what went into them! Go to therecipe pages to find hundreds of recipes We have had great fun making some sweet treats for Christmas, see WI LIfe  Nov & Dec Issue 72 for more details as well as the recipe pages for all the Cranberry recipes. The spiced vodka recipe can be made using different red fruits or spirits for a range of drinks WI members are committed to improving the nation’s diet and health particularly regarding food and sustainability. The emergence of childhood obesity and the cumulative effect of advertising unhealthy food and soft drinks reinforce bad dietary habits and undermines parents and health professionals in encouraging healthier eating. What the WI does The NFWI trained cookery and preserves judges follow the WI publication On with the Show, an indispensable guide for exhibitors, judges and show committees. A range of tempting recipes and for inspiring cookery courses visit our WI Cookery School at Denman, Marcham, Oxfordshire. NFWI Baking and Preserves Courses for WI members in federations NFWI Demonstrators course, blended learning ie WI moodle and taught, for WI members Campaigning on food issues that matter to members. Up to date information for members including food hygiene and nutrition. Let’s Cook Local The Let’s Cook Local project which ran 2011 – 2013 gave WI members the opportunity to support young families in their areas by running basic cookery courses using local food and avoiding waste so that they have the knowledge and skills to eat healthily on a budget. Let’s Cook Local was sponsored by the the Big Lottery, Local Food from May 2011 – August 2013. The WI achieved all the targets set by the Big Lottery and a number of WI Federations are still running the final courses.
